THE SOCIETY

Image
The recent instances of sexual violence in Pakistan, specifically perpetrated against women, unravel the horror of the society we reside in.   This goes without saying that the horrendous occurrences of rape, domestic violence, street harassment, and femicide clearly produce negative psychological consequences on the minds of young girls who aspire to achieve their ambitions and dreams. Therefore, it becomes of vital importance to understand the ubiquitous mindset of the perpetrator that allows them to commit a crime like that and the people who blame the victims thereafter the circumstance. Disentangling the fundamental ground based on which these events occur is not very complex to do so. It all starts with the basic upbringing of a boy in a society like that of Pakistan.   For most of the Pakistani households, guys grow up seeing their mothers and sisters working within the boundaries of their houses. What that essentially means is that it is not infrequent for them ...

A CHALLENGE WORTH UNDERTAKING

Image
Seated on the wooden chair while writing a report for a summer internship, I felt a sense of despondency; with no concrete reason for the monotonous sentiment, I felt a sudden but arbitrary urge to text my Uncle (mom's brother) to ask if he had any plans to make a trip up north (the northern areas of Pakistan).  Having made a travel company (Rovers) only recently, he has been taking groups upon groups of people to an array of places in Pakistan. After an hour that seemed like the most arduous, lengthy sixty minutes of my life, he replied "Yes, I am going to Haramosh Valley next week." As somebody who is precisely ignorant about the places up north of Pakistan, the first thing i did was google the place. It caught my attention; in fact, it would be hard for anyone to ignore the scenic beauty, all evident in the pictures on search engines. After calling him to inquire more details about the supposed jaunt, I grasped that this was more than a jaunt. In other words, this was ...

WOMEN IN PALESTINE The need for an independent Palestinian state led to two intifadas, with the first intifada persisting between the years 1987 to 1993 and the second one from the year 2000 to the year 2005. Intifadas (shaking off) were the popular Palestinian uprisings aimed at interdicting the Israeli illegal occupation of regions of Palestine, now identified as OPT or Occupied Palestinian Territories. OPT is identified with two prime regions of Palestine, the west bank and the Gaza strip. With the inception of the 2007 blockade by the Israeli forces, the tensions and conflicts between Palestine and Israel have only exacerbated, bringing mass social disorder for the Palestinians living in the occupied Palestine territories. The worsening yet burgeoning socio-economic predicaments coupled with the cumbersome Palestine-Israel relations have induced a downward spiraling economy, an economy on the precipice of instability. The conflict and its gloom-ridden repercussions have espe...

FROM JOY TO AGONY

Image
As Zehra lay on the bed observing the lofty fan  rotating on  the flat wooden ceiling, she waited patiently for the clock to strike eleven-thirty. Her mother was going to take her shopping today at the main market and that was indeed a rare treat for Zehra. Her mother, a prudent and diligent lady, struggled to keep the family of two afloat: on weekends, she worked overtime at the Khan’s mansion as their maid to earn enough to sustain herself and her six-year-old daughter. Although she exhibited a strong yet benign and jovial composure, the young girl knew that her mother was dejected and depressed inside. For Zehra was an un forthcoming girl, she never revealed to her mom that almost every other night, she would peek out of the room to see her mother weeping silently on the patio while gazing at the stars, as if longing for something that she just could not acquire.  Zehra was not mature enough to understand a lot about the things happening in her country but whene...

SOCIALISM

Image
INTRODUCTION Socialism is a political, social, and economic philosophy which advocates for collectivism. Socialism and thus the Socialists assume that the basic nature of people is Cooperative. Viewing from a broad spectrum, Socialism, as a system, promotes that every person in a community should have an equal share of the factors of production (land, labor, capital, and entrepreneurship). People are provided with such ownership of economic resources through a democratically elected government or through public corporation that ensures equitable distribution of wealth. Systems within Socialism (Anarchism, Utopianism etc.) differ a lot in terms of structure; however, they all share the basic belief that public ownership is the most effective way to better distribute wealth and create a healthy working society. Socialism has a popular mantra: “FROM EACH ACCORDING TO HIS ABILITY, TO EACH ACCORDING TO HIS CONTRIBUTION.” Understanding the above motto is indispensable t...
